As a proud dog owner, my top goal is Ada's happiness and health! One popular chew toy is the deer antler, which Ada loves. I want to explore the pros and cons of giving her one and share why I think RedBarn products are a great choice!
The Good of Giving Your Dog a Deer Antler
Natural and Safe: Deer antlers are made from natural materials, making them a safer option compared to synthetic toys. They do not contain harmful chemicals or additives, which is crucial for a dog's health.
Durability: One major advantage of deer antlers is their remarkable durability. They can withstand heavy chewing, lasting significantly longer than softer chew toys. Many pet owners have reported that a single antler can last their dog several weeks or even months.
Dental Health: Chewing on deer antlers can enhance dental health. The natural texture helps reduce plaque and tartar build-up, which can improve Ada's oral hygiene over time. Studies suggest that regular chewing can decrease dental disease in dogs by 40%.
Nutritional Benefits: Deer antlers are packed with essential minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. As Ada enjoys chewing, she can absorb these nutrients, which are vital for strong bones and overall health.
Mental Stimulation: Chewing satisfies a natural instinct in dogs. Providing Ada with a deer antler can keep her mentally engaged, reducing boredom and minimizing the chances of destructive behaviors like chewing on furniture.
Scent and Flavor: The natural scent and flavor of deer antlers attract dogs. Many pet owners find that their dogs prefer these over artificial toys, leading to longer play sessions.
The Bad of Giving Your Dog a Deer Antler
Hardness: While the toughness of deer antlers is a benefit, it can also be a drawback. Some dogs may find them too hard, leading to a risk of broken teeth. A study showed that around 10% of dogs experience dental issues related to hard chew toys.
Splintering: Deer antlers can splinter, which poses a choking hazard or may cause internal injuries if ingested. It's essential to supervise your dog during chewing sessions, especially with newer antlers.
Cost: Deer antlers often come with a higher price tag compared to traditional chew toys. Prices can vary widely, typically ranging from $15 to $40, depending on the size and quality.
Not Suitable for All Dogs: Just because many dogs love deer antlers doesn’t mean all do. Some dogs may show no interest. It's crucial to know your dog’s preferences to avoid wasting money on a chew toy they won’t use.
Limited Availability: Depending on your location, finding high-quality deer antlers might be challenging. Not all pet stores carry them, and online inventory can fluctuate.

Wrapping Up
Giving your dog a deer antler chew toy has both advantages and disadvantages. While they offer excellent benefits like natural ingredients and durability, it's essential to consider your dog's individual chewing habits and preferences. For Ada, the deer antler from RedBarn has been a fantastic choice. With their commitment to quality and sustainability, I feel assured that I am providing her with a safe and rewarding chew toy.
If you're on the fence about getting your dog a deer antler, talk to your vet first and foremost. I do recommend exploring RedBarn products. They meet Ada’s needs and align with my values as a responsible pet owner. Happy chewing!
**UPDATE 8/28/25 So Ada's quite the intense chewer. She eventually broke the antler, and it splintered, but it took her about 3 days this time, which is longer than her usual 24 hours. From now on, I think it's best to buy antlers for her directly from a store, so I can check how thick they are. The antler we tried this time was from Chewy, and when you buy online, you're relying on the sender to choose the size for you.
